Start with the purchase you actually want
Choose one exact card and one copy before comparing numbers. Then write down the listed card price, the shipping for that purchase, and any tax or other fees you already know. Keep unknown costs visibly unknown rather than silently treating them as free.
For the amounts you know, the arithmetic is simple:
Entered-cost total = card price + shipping + known tax and fees.
The MTGPicks deal calculator does that arithmetic in your browser. It does not look up a market price, verify stock, or submit a retailer order. If you have not entered tax, its result excludes tax.
Choose a reference that answers your question
If you are comparing two sellers, use each purchase’s complete costs on the same basis. Do not compare one seller’s checkout total with another seller’s card price alone and call the difference a saving.
If you are comparing against a price guide, label that as a reference comparison instead. TCGplayer describes its Market Price as based on actual recent sales.[1] That number answers a different question from “what will this exact order cost me now?”
You can also use your own budget as the reference. A total below your budget means it fits the amount you entered—not that it is the best available listing.
A cart needs a cart-level comparison
Shared shipping is where a quick single-card comparison can mislead. If one shipping charge covers several cards, do not add that full charge to every card and sum those totals. Compare the complete cart, or document a consistent way to allocate that shipping.
This first version of our calculator handles one card, one purchase. It does not optimize carts, promise free-shipping eligibility, or automatically allocate a shared charge.
Before completing the purchase
- Match the seller and the exact card version you compared.
- Confirm the quantity and current availability.
- Check the retailer’s final shipping, tax, and total.
- Ask whether you wanted the card before seeing the discount.
A smaller percentage discount with a better final cost may fit your purpose. Buying something unnecessary to reach a shipping threshold may not. Let the complete purchase—not the headline percentage—drive the decision.
